Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Saxons Dominate Fourth Quarter in Win Over Medaille

AU finishes 1-1 at Brockport Invitational

BROCKPORT, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team took on Medaille College on day two of the Brockport tip-off tournament. The Saxons (1-2, 0-0 Empire 8) were lead by huge games from both Jamie Wilcox (Forestville, NY / Pine Valley) and Bri Hicks (Burlington, VT / Ithaca) to pick up their first win on the young season.

After going down 20-8 after the first quarter to Medialle, AU picked up the offense in the second to make it a 38-31 game at the halftime break.

Wilcox and Hicks showed off their skills during the early portion of the second half along with a big three from Lyndsey McCoy (Middleburgh, NY / Middleburgh Central) to keep the Saxons in the game after three quarters.

The fourth quarter was where the Saxons took over as Hicks continued to dominate inside while McCoy and Wilcox took over from the perimeter to bring the Saxons back from behind.

The big fourth quarter from Alfred gave them the 75-58 victory over the Mavericks.

Wilcox and Hicks both finished with 21 points on the afternoon. Hicks also grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked three shots. Gillian Flint (Caledonia, NY / Caledonia-Mumford), Ana Ion (Bucharest, Romania / Episcopal of Jacksonville) and McCoy all ended with eight points on the day.

"We Started slow, which is always dangerous, especially when it seemed like they couldn't miss in the first quarter," Head Coach Mike Moskowitz said. "Finally, we started stringing together some stops which got us going offensively in the second quarter. Unfortunately, we had a few mental lapses where we didn't finish plays defensively and their point guard got some huge offensive rebounds that led to second chance points in the first half. We didn't make any technical adjustments at halftime – we spoke about trusting ourselves and our teammates and continuing to focus on breaking the game into mini battles of three possessions. Ultimately, we did just that and our defensive intensity and offensive execution in the fourth quarter allowed us to finish the game how we know we are capable of playing."

The Saxons will be on the road once again next Friday as they take on Morrisville State at 7PM.
