EATON, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team was on the road at Morrisville State College on Friday. The Saxons (1-3, 0-0 Empire 8) fell to a hot shooting Morrisville team by a score of 82-68.
Â
The three-point show began early on for Morrisville as they used the long ball to score 27 first quarter points.
Â
The Saxons had trouble keeping up and found themselves down 27-12 after the first quarter.
Â
AU was able to get into the paint and to the free throw line in the second period but still were down 13 after two quarters of play.
Â
The Saxons made a few runs in the third quarter with a three from
Amanda Figueroa (Cypress, TX / Rosehill Christian) to cut the deficit to just six points.
Â
Morrisville used the lead to its advantage in the final period and were able to get to the free throw line with regularity and put the game on ice to come away with the victory.
Â
"We got exactly what we wanted out of our press break, which was a lot of 2 on 1, 3 on 2's," Head Coach
Mike Moskowitz said. "We did not convert multiple easy looks at the rim and Morrisville did a great job of staying persistent with their game plan and it sped us up over and over. Even worse, we were over thinking instead of seeing the floor. We will see how we can respond tomorrow against a talented Oswego team."
Â
Bri Hicks (Ithaca, NY / Ithaca) continued her strong play to open the season with 18 points and eight boards.
Ana Ion (Bucharest, Romania / Episcopal of Jacksonville) scored 13 and grabbed eight rebounds while
Gillian Flint (Caledonia, NY / Caledonia) finished with 11 points and eight boards.
Jamie Wilcox (Forestville, NY / Pine Valley) ended with a 10 point, 13 rebound double-double.
Â
The Saxons will play their first home game next Tuesday as they host Keuka College at 7PM in Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
