Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Alfred drops 68-47 decision at Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Alfred University women's basketball team couldn't recover from an early shooting drought, falling to Brockport by a 68-47 score in the first day of the Brockport Tip-Off Invitational Friday evening, held at the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.

Alfred falls to 0-2 on the season, while Brockport improves to 2-0.

Gillian Flint (Caledonia, N.Y./Caledonia-Mumford) filled the stat sheet for the second consecutive game, leading the team with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals, going 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Ana Ion (Bucharest, Romania/Episcopal School of Jacksonville) also tallied 10 points, shooting 4-for-8 from the field, adding three rebounds, a steal, and a blocked shot. Lyndsey McCoy (Middleburgh, N.Y./Middleburgh Central) chipped in eight points and four rebounds. AU was held to 27.3 percent (12-for-44) shooting from the field in the loss.

Julianna Taylor led Brockport with 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field. Bailey Pratt and Kylee Rosbrook added 10 points each. The Golden Eagles shot 45 percent (27-of-60) from the field, outrebounding the Saxons by a 45-26 margin.

The Saxons attacked the hoop with reckless abandon early on, but the hosts rode a strong shooting start to a 12-point, 19-7 lead. Near the end of the first half, Flint grabbed a rebound and went coast-to-coast, laying the ball up to reduce the deficit to 10 with 42 seconds left. The Golden Eagles would later beat the buzzer with a Nicole Leslie bucket off an offensive rebound.

The Saxons were held scoreless for most of the second quarter but kept the Golden Eagle offense at bay as Brockport scored six points in the first five minutes to take an 18-point, 27-9 lead. The Saxons broke the 5:16 drought with a made Samantha Pierre-Louis (Wheatley Heights, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) free throw. Alfred began to bully its way to the charity stripe in an effort to chip away at the Brockport lead, but the Golden Eagles were able to take a 20-point, 37-17 lead into halftime.

The Golden Eagles scored the first seven points of the second half, bringing the lead to 44-17. A driving layup by Amanda Figueroa (Cypress, Texas/Rosehill Christian) broke a 9-1 Brockport run, snapping AU's field goal drought. Brockport would extend its lead to as many as 32 points (60-28) early in the fourth quarter.

The Saxons then caught fire, going on a massive run thanks in part to a barrage of 3-pointers from Flint, McCoy, and Jamie Wilcox (Forrestville, N.Y./Pine Valley). Rebecca Jewett (Nyack, N.Y./Nyack) completed the 16-1 run with a made free throw, bringing the deficit to 61-44.  AU would eventually outscore Brockport by a 19-8 margin in the final quarter, shooting 50 percent (4-for-8) from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.

"As always, basketball is a game of confidence," said head coach Mike Moskowitz. "It's tough to win when you only make 12 field goals. I think we executed the half-court scout defense really well, but unfortunately in the first half we didn't execute the simple things. It was nice to see us make a 16-1 run in the fourth quarter by simply spacing the floor and sharing the ball. Hopefully tomorrow we can come out with more confidence, which will lead to more made baskets and allow us to press more effectively."

The Saxons will wrap-up play at the Brockport Tip-Off Invitational Saturday, squaring off against Medaille in the consolation contest at 2 p.m.
