Edmister Breaks Utica Pool Record as Men's Swimming & Diving Rushes Past Pioneers

Results

UTICA, NY – The Alfred University men's swimming & diving team defeated Empire 8 foe, Utica College on the road on Friday afternoon, 166-53.

"Usually the second half of our season starts off a bit shaky, as we are pretty beat up from intense training," Head Coach Brian Striker said. "I don't go into a meet like this ready to be critical of times for the swimmers, nor scores for the divers; typically I am looking for how well they execute proper form and the technique adjustments that we have been working on. That being said, we had some great times and scores today as well as saw our hard work starting to pay off. We definitely looked a little tired, and I am excited to get them some rest, but not quite yet. We have three more dual meets in the next two weeks and we will keep our focus and intensity up with goals of peaking at our championships in February."

Andy Edmister (Belmont, NY/Genesee Valley Central) had a memorable day as he broke the Utica College pool record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.16 as he lead Ian Evans (Hornell, NY/Hornell) and Kyle McGlynn (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) in a 1-2-3 sweep of the event with Evans marking a 1:05.45 and McGlynn a 1:07.99 on Friday.

Edmister also teamed with Richard Berger (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz), Vincent Tamplain (Luling, LA/Hahnville) and Ryan Brown (Olean, NY/Olean) for a first place, 1:41.33 finish in the 200-yard medley relay. Edmister also finished second in the 50 free with a 22.86.

Tamplain composed a winning performance in the 200 individual medley with a 2:09.60 while Justin Jarmer (Flagstaff, AZ/Northland Preparatory Academy) and Zach Goodwin (Holden, MA/Wachusett) completed a 1-2-3 finish in the event as Jarmer's 2:15.29 took second and Goodwin's 2:15.52 earned the three-spot.

Berger and Brown also led 1-2-3 finishes to pick up their second wins of the day each. Berger led Ethan Zyglocke (Livonia, NY/Livonia) and Fynn Vossler (Livonia, NY/Livonia) in the 100 breaststroke with Berger's 1:02.38, Zyglocke and his 1:06.61 and Vossler's 1:06.84. Brown, Goodwin and Tamplain capped off the 100-yard butterfly with Brown's 57.41, Goodwin's 57.87 and Tamplain's 58.10.

The final 1-2-3 finish of the day was led by senior Justin Cerrato (Beekman, NY/Arlington) in the 200 freestyle. He swam a 1:56.14 to pace Yunneng Du (Yorktown, VA/Tabb) with a 1:59.97 and McGlynn and his 2:09.97 third place finish.

Chris Deaver (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) and Noah Koltenuk (Danville, PA/Danville Area) also picked up wins on the day. Deaver won the 1-meter diving with a score of 306.75 while Koltenuk took first in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a 10:40.91 while A.J. Specchio (Watkins Glen, NY/Watkins Glen) followed with an 11:26.83 for the one-two punch in the event. The men's divers also competed in a second round of the 1-meter diving that included five dives instead of six in order to gauge an 11-dive, championship meet score in which Deaver also took first with a six-dive and five-dive combined score of 484.30 points, which is under 40 points away from the Alfred University school record.

The Saxons will next host Le Moyne College on Tuesday, January 15 at 1PM in the Lebohner Pool before hosting Hartwick College on Saturday at 1PM on January 19.
