ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's soccer team won in thrilling overtime fashion against Elmira College on Saturday afternoon. The Saxons (3-8, 2-1 Empire 8) defeated the Soaring Eagles by a score of 2-1.

The hero of this game was Alexander Tostanoski (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) with a header goal in the second overtime period to send the Saxons to victory. Brennan Jelstrom (Loudonville, NY/Shaker) set up Tostanoski with a perfect pass from deep out.

The game started slow with both teams scoreless heading into halftime. Raquan Hinds (Rochester, NY/Wilson Magnet) put Alfred on the board in the second half at the 47:38 mark with a goal assisted by Cody Cronmiller (Livonia, NY/Livonia). The Soaring Eagles responded in the 58th minute when a corner kick turned into a header goal by Luke LeClair to make it a 1-1 game. The remainder of regulation was a physical defensive battle to force overtime.

Neither team could break the tie in the first 10 minutes of extra play, but with 7:43 left on the clock in the second extra period, Tostanoski finished the job for the Saxons.  Joe Gonzalez (Marion, NY/Marion) recorded six saves on the day for AU.

"A Tough contest today against Elmira and another tough contest in the Empire 8," Head Coach Tracy Blake said. "I thought we challenged the ball very well and we could have been up by a couple goals before overtime. In the first overtime, they [Elmira] had a couple of great opportunities followed by some amazing saves from our fantastic goalkeeper, Joe [Gonzalez]. In the second overtime, we had a great ball in from Brennan [Jelstrom] and a great header from Alexander [Tostanoski]."

AU will be back at home on Tuesday evening for a non-conference matchup with Fredonia State beginning at 7PM.
