ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's tennis team (2-10, 2-5 Empire 8) dropped a 4-5 decision to Nazareth College at home on Friday evening, despite three-set efforts by multiple Saxons.

The Golden Flyers grabbed a 2-1 lead following doubles play. Senior
Mike Wisniewski (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville East) and first year
Adam Shearer (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) nabbed the sole win for the Saxons at #2 doubles, 8-5.

Following doubles play, the match came down to various one-on-one battles to the finish. Nazareth grabbed a 3-1 win after taking a decision at #5 singles. However, AU bounced back when Wisniewski took home another win on the evening at #2 singles with ease, 6-2, 6-2.

The Golden Flyers increased the lead to 4-2 with a win at #6 singles before first year
Ryan Brown (Olean, NY/Olean) took home a win at #3 singles. He took the first set 6-4 before dropping the second 2-6. However, he returned to the third set and won 7-6 (7-3) to bring the Saxons within one, 4-3.

AU knotted the match up at four when sophomore
John Papin (Rochester, NY/The Harley School) won at #4 singles. He dropped the first set 2-6, before storming back to win 6-2, 7-6 (7-1).
The match came down to the final point when senior
Kevin Volz (Olean, NY/Olean) squared off with Ryley Amond. Volz won the first set 4-6, but dropped the next two sets 7-5, 7-5.
"There were a ton of three setters tonight," Head Coach
Mike Graham added. "Everyone fought for every point. It was a well-played match overall."
The Saxons remain at home tomorrow when they host Empire 8 opponent Sage at 1PM.
