DELHI, NY -- The Alfred University men's tennis team (2-8, 2-3 Empire 8) fell 4-5 to the Hartwick Hawks in Empire 8 play on Saturday afternoon.

The Saxons jumped out to an early lead following doubles play despite the Hawks earning the first win at #3 doubles. Junior Peter Smock (Prattsburgh, NY/Prattsburgh) and senior Mike Wisniewski (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville East) knotted the match up, taking the win 8-7 (7-4). Senior Kevin Volz (Olean, NY/Olean) and first year Ryan Brown (Olean, NY/Olean) broke the tie, taking a win 8-7 (7-4).

The Hawks took back the advantage when they took wins at #5 and #4 singles. Volz brought the Saxons back with a 6-4, 6-1 win at #2 singles before Hartwick took home the win with wins at #1 and #6 singles.

Wisniewski closed out the match with a win at #3 singles by downing his opponent 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8). 

"Kevin Volz played fantastic again today," Head Coach Mike Graham stated. "He was great with supporting his team and staying mentally positive during what turned out be an awesome win for him."

The Saxons remain on the road when they travel to St. John Fisher on Tuesday to take on the Cardinals at 4PM.
