OLEAN, NY -- The Alfred University men's tennis team (2-7, 2-2 Empire 8) defeated Elmira College 6-3 in Olean, NY during Empire 8 play.
The duo of
Kevin Volz (Olean, NY/Olean) and
Ryan Brown (Olean, NY/Olean) won in both doubles and singles, earning the Saxons three wins total. As a team, they defeated their opponents 8-4 to earn their fourth win as a pair this season. Volz went on to win 6-4, 6-4 at #2 singles, defeating Yaniv Kogan. He was followed by Brown who earned a win 6-3, 6-4 at #4 singles.
Sophomores
Reeder Bruffey (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) and
John Papin (Rochester, NY/The Harley School) won at #3 doubles to give AU the lead heading into singles play. They toppled their opponents 8-3.
Singles play opened with Brown increasing the lead for the Saxons. However, the Soaring Eagles bounced back with a win at #1 singles to bring the match to 3-2. Senior
Mike Wisniewski (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville East) grabbed another win at #3 singles, taking the win 6-4, 6-3. Volz went on to seal the match for AU with his win at #2 singles. Bruffey added the icing on the cake with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 win at #6 singles.
"We had a huge win against a tough team," Head Coach
Mike Graham said. "I feel as if with these two wins back-to-back, we have a lot of confidence going into another tough match tomorrow."
The Saxons travel to Hartwick to take on the Hawks at 1PM on Saturday afternoon.
