Alfred’s Strong Second Quarter Play Not Enough Against Non-Conference Opponent Oberlin

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team fell to visiting Oberlin College Saturday afternoon, 72-46 in non-conference action at the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
 
The Saxons (2-17, 0-10 Empire 8) were paced by sophomore forward Bri Hicks (Burlington, VT/Ithaca) as she finished one rebound shy of having three-straight games with a double-double (10 points, 9 rebounds). Junior guard Katlyn Boland New York, NY/A. Phillip Randolph) finished with nine points and four assists while first-year guard Chloe Kottwitz (Bolivar, NY/Bolivar-Richburg) chipped in seven points. First-year guard Amanda Figueroa (Cypress, TX/Rosehill Christian) grabbed 10 rebounds (6 offense, 4 defense) for Alfred.
 
Hicks got the scoring off for Alfred as she drove the lane for the layup. Alex Stipano answered with a three-pointer that helped the Yeowomen score 14 unanswered points. Kottwitz halted the run as first-year guard Lyndsey McCoy (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburgh Central) was able to find her to help set up the three-point basket to make it 14-5 with 3:54 to play in the opening quarter. Oberlin ended the quarter having the 20-9 advantage.
 
With Alfred trying to find ways to create some offense, Boland took over, scoring five straight for the Saxons including her and-one opportunity to make it 22-14. The Saxons were able to cut the deficit to six as sophomore guard Jamie Wilcox (Forestville, NY/Pine Valley) drove the lane for the layup. Oberlin would try to create some separation, leading by as much as 10 before Hicks helped cut the lead to seven to make it 36-29 going into halftime.
 
The Yeowomen were led by Tyler Parlor with 16 points while three other players score 11 points apiece. Abby Andrews led the team in rebounds with 10.
 
Oberlin held the advantage in second chance points (13-9) while Alfred had the edge in bench points (15-14). Both teams score 12 points off of turnover opportunities.
 
The Saxons change gears and head back into conference plays as they host St. John Fisher on February 6 at 8 PM at the Galanis Family Arena.
