ALFRED, NY – Senior attack
Jake Lynch (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point) picked up where he left off to start the 2018 campaign as he netted five goals and added an assist as the Alfred University men's lacrosse team defeated visiting Moravian College 10-4 Saturday afternoon at Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (1-0,0-0 Empire 8) also got three goals from junior
Joe Fornataro (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) while first-year attack
Cale Donegan (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) and junior attack
Anthony Ricottilli (Cortland, NY/Cortland) each scored a goal to round out the scoring for Alfred.
Lynch wasted no time at the start of the game as he scored at the 13:30 mark off the feed from Donegan to give Alfred the 1-0 advantage. Lynch scored his second goal with 4:01 to play in the first to push the lead to 2-0. As the quarter was coming to an end, Lynch found Donegan for his first collegiate goal to make it 3-0 at the end of one quarter.
AU was able to extend their lead to 5-0 at THE end of the half with goals from Fornataro at the 13:21 mark and from Lynch with 1:56 to go in the half.
The Greyhounds found some offense in the third quarter as
Cade Siddron found the back of the net twice, both on man-up opportunities.
Connor Hull helped cut the deficit to 6-3 as he scored with 1:17 to go in the third quarter. The Saxons put the game on ice in the fourth as they outscored Moravian, 4-1.
"It was good to get back out there," Head Coach
Jason Lockner said. "We had a lot of first-years playing with a lot of last year's seniors graduating and they did great. Cale (Donegan) played like an upper classmen which was huge while Briggs did a tremendous job in the face-off circle. We hope to clean up some of our shooting as the season progresses."
Sophomore defender
Shane Weber (Hull, MA/Hull) led the Saxons on defense as he had three caused turnovers while senior midfielder
David LaSpina (Webster, NY/Webster) and sophomore midfielder
Garrette Briggs (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) led the team in ground balls with seven each. Weber and Ricottilli also had four ground balls as well.
Briggs also finished with 15 face-offs won (out of 18).
Senior goaltender
Drew Gardner (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point) went the distance in net, making six saves on 10 shots faced.
Will Dadorius went the distance in net for Moravian, making 15 saves on 25 shots faced.
The Saxons next travel to The College at Brockport next Tuesday, February 28, with a game-time start at 4 PM.
