OLEAN, NY – The Alfred University men's tennis team dropped its first match of the 2018-portion of its schedule to the University of Pittsburgh Bradford on Friday evening, 5-4 at the St. Bonaventure Tennis Center.

The doubles teams for the Saxons (0-2, 0-0 Empire 8) had a rough start as the No. 2 team of
Kevin Volz (Olean, NY/Olean) and
Reeder Bruffey (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) were the only duo to pick up a win. They topped the Panthers'
Matthew Gram and
Colby Mills in dominant fashion, 8-1.

In singles, Volz led Alfred University with a tight, 9-8 (7-2), tiebreaker win at No. 1 singles over his younger brother,
Jacob Volz.
Mike Wisniewski (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville East) earned a singles win at No. 3 just like the No. 2 doubles team, defeating Gram, 8-1.

The No. 4 singles Saxon,
John Papin (Rochester, NY/The Harley School) earned a close, 9-7 win over Pitt-Bradford's Mills to round out the singles wins for Alfred University.

"The guys played pretty well today with it being our first match of the 2018 season," Head Coach
Mike Graham said. "With the non-conference match, we had the chance to play some of our younger players to give them the experience of collegiate tennis."

The Saxons will next head to Rochester, NY to take on non-conference, Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday, March 3 at 2:30PM.
