WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Alfred University women's basketball team finished its weekend with a win over New England College, 81-66 on Saturday during the final day of the Williams College Tournament.
The Saxons (2-4, 0-0 Empire 8) put together a strong first quarter and finished with a complete second half as they scored more than 20 points in the first, third and fourth quarters. New England was the first on the board with a 2-0 lead before
Jamie Wilcox (Forestville, NY/Pine Valley) tied it with a jumper and
Bri Hicks (Burlington, VT/Ithaca) put in a layup for the 4-2 lead. New England managed to tie the game at 7-7 with a 3-pointer before the Saxons constructed a 21-7 run to close out the first 10 minutes of play.
The game was never tied again and Alfred University never gave up its lead despite being outscored 17-9 in the second half and going into halftime with a 37-31 advantage. "Not the most aesthetically pleasing basketball game, but we like to play in the mud and figure out a way to come out with a win," Head Coach
Mike Moskowitz said. "I thought we finally executed a defensive game plan. #24 was a really good basketball player and got some baskets in early. But we overloaded our help, got in the gaps and made the other players try to score. We executed on both ends of the court in the fourth quarter and sealed the victory."
Lyndsey McCoy (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburgh Central) led the Saxons with a collegiate career-high 24 points as she went 14-for-16 from the free throw line and added two 3-pointers and another two field goals from inside of the arc. Hicks followed McCoy with 21 points as she was two points off of breaking her own collegiate career-best. Her and Wilcox both led the Saxons with eight rebounds each while both Hicks and McCoy had two steals. McCoy also had the game's only block.
Amanda Figueroa (Cypress, TX/Rosehill Christian) chipped in with 11 points while
Allison O'Toole (Simi Valley, CA/Simi Valley) had 10.
Katlyn Boland (New York, NY/A. Phillip Randolph) had a team-high four assists while McCoy, O'Toole and
Samantha Pierre-Louis (Wheatley Heights, NY/Half Hollow Hills West) each had three assists.
The Saxons will next host SUNY Delhi on Friday, December 7 at 5PM. "Hopefully we can build off of this and have a few quality days of practice before our game against Delhi on Friday," Coach Moskowitz said. They will then close out the 2018-portion of their schedule when they host Oswego State on Saturday, December 15 at 1pm.
