ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team defeated SUNY Delhi in a Friday evening non-conference matchup. The Saxons (3-4, 0-0 Empire 8) cruised to victory, 71-56 over the visiting Broncos.

The Saxons jumped out to a quick start, when they took advantage of 10 SUNY Delhi first quarter turnovers to go up 26-8 after one.

The Broncos settled down in the second quarter, as they outscored the Saxons 22-11, including a 10-0 run in the later minutes of the period to cut it to a four point game with 11 seconds left to play in the half.

With just three seconds remaining on the clock in the second quarter, AU would inbound the ball just over mid-court when Chloe Kottwitz (Bolivar, NY/Bolivar-Richburg) gathered the pass and heaved up a near mid-court shot that went through at the buzzer to send the teams into halftime with Alfred leading 37-30.

The Saxons gathered themselves during the break and came out with great energy, which led to an 11-4 run to open the third quarter. Fast break points and offensive rebounds helped AU to outscore the Broncos 22-11 in the third quarter and extend its lead to 18 points.

The Saxons would buckle down the defense in the final quarter, allowing just 15 points from SUNY Delhi to run away with their second straight victory.

"Playing against Delhi, I had a feeling that they were going to play some zone so we prepared well for it.  We really worked on getting the ball to the baseline and then diving our big to the bucket," Head Coach Mike Moskowitz said.

Jamie Wilcox (Forestville, NY/Pine Valley) led the Saxon scoring with 15 points while shooting 2-3 from beyond the arc. Bri Hicks (Burlington, VT/Ithaca) scored 14 while grabbing 11 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end. Hicks also had one blocked shot and four steals on the defensive end. Allison O'Toole (Simi Valley, CA/Simi Valley) had a season high 12 points while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out four assists. Lyndsey McCoy (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburgh Central) had a double-double on the evening with 11 points and 10 boards.

"We've got shooters all around and we were aggressive shooting the three. Although we weren't necessarily getting a lot of those shots to fall, being aggressive and getting out and running to tire them out was part of our game plan," Moskowitz said.

The Saxons will have just over a week off before they host Oswego State next Saturday afternoon at 1PM.
