WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Alfred University women's basketball team dropped the first game of a two-day weekend tournament hosted by Williams College. The Saxons (1-4, 0-0 Empire 8) fell to the Ephs by an 81-40 score.
Williams dominated from the tip, going up by 20 after the first quarter. The Saxons were able to play even with the Ephs for a majority of the second period until a three pointer from Williams started a run through the end of the second quarter to send AU into the locker room down 51-22 at halftime.
"It was evident Williams got whatever they wanted in the first half. We didn't execute much defensively and allowed open three's along with giving them 14 free points on the foul line," Head Coach
Mike Moskowitz said.
After a one-sided first half, Alfred was able to buckle down and play strong defense in the third quarter, holding Williams to just 12 points.
"Third quarter, we came out with more urgency on defense and held them to a 12 point quarter," Moskowitz said. "I'd like to see us respond tomorrow with a better defensive focus for 40 minutes."
Katlyn Boland (New York, NY/ A. Phillip Randolph) led the way for Alfred with 10 points as well as three steals and a block on the defensive end.
Bri Hicks (Burlington, VT/Ithaca) chipped in seven points and two steals while
Jamie Wilcox (Forestville, NY/Pine Valley) had six points and three boards.
The Saxons will be right back on the court tomorrow for a 1PM tip versus either Tufts or New England College.
