ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team took on 23rd ranked SUNY Geneseo on Tuesday evening in a non-conference matchup at Terry S. Galanis Family Arena. The Saxons (1-3, 0-0 Empire 8) were defeated by the Knights by a score of 85-49.

Geneseo had a fast start out of the gates going up 13-4 around the five minute mark of the first quarter. After a few stagnant minutes of play, the Knights picked up the offense once again scoring nine unanswered to take a commanding 22-7 lead after one period.

The second period began in a similar fashion with Geneseo extending its lead to as much as 20 with 4:49 left to play in the first half. A three point bucket from Lyndsey McCoy (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburgh Central) followed by a fast break layup from Allison O'Toole (Simi Valley, CA/Simi Valley) cut the Geneseo lead to 15 and got AU into an offensive groove. A 12-2 run including seven points in the final 1:42 of the half from Bri Hicks (Burlington, VT/Ithaca) allowed Alfred to get back into the game and sent the teams into halftime with SUNY Geneseo leading 41-31.

After a few slow minutes to open the third quarter, Alfred kept themselves in the game with the deficit at just 12 with 7:39 left in the period. It wouldn't take long after that for the Knights to pick up the pace once again when they went on a 22-5 run to close out the third quarter and head into the fourth leading 67-38. Geneseo would continue to extend the lead in the fourth, outscoring the Saxons 18-11 on their way to the win.

"I thought overall we competed pretty well against a very well coached and disciplined Geneseo team," Head Coach Mike Moskowitz said. "We tried to muck it up and throw different defenses at them, which sparked our 12-2 run to close the half and cut it to 10. We just couldn't get shots to fall in the third quarter, and at the same time they came out refocused and reenergized and that's when they began to pull away."

Jamie Wilcox (Forestville, NY/Pine Valley) led AU with 11 points while grabbing seven rebounds on the evening. Amanda Figueroa (Cypress, TX/Rosehill Christian) added nine points, making three of seven shots from beyond the arc. Hicks added seven points and two assists while McCoy chipped in six and had five boards.

The Saxons will be on the road this upcoming Friday and Saturday for a tournament at Williams College. AU will face off with Williams on Friday evening at 6PM then will play either Tufts or New England College on Saturday afternoon with the tip of that game TBD.
