ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team upped its win streak to four with an 88-76 victory at Rochester Institute of Technology on Tuesday evening.
The Saxons (4-0, 0-0 Empire 8) put up 44 points in each half while RIT scored 38 points in each half. Alfred University was led by
Dom LeMorta (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) with 21 points on the evening as he guided another three Saxons into double-digit scoring.
"It was a great team win tonight," Head Coach
Russ Phillips said. "RIT did a great job on the offensive boards in the first half and we responded well in the second, which allowed us to push the tempo and separate the score."
The first seven minutes of the game were a standard, back-and-forth between the Saxons and the Tigers as neither team managed to build more than a three-point lead that also featured multiple lead changes. It wasn't until an 8-0 run that the Saxons put up a five-point, 18-13 lead started by a
Brewster Marshall (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) layup. LeMorta and
Cole Eells (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) followed with layups before Marshall rounded it out with another layup.
RIT closed the gap to take a 21-20 lead off a 3-pointer with just under nine minutes to play and continued on to make it a 30-24 margin. With just over six minutes in the first half to go, Alfred University went on a spree that began with a LeMorta layup at the 6:14 mark. The Saxon veterans helped put together a 20-8 run to head into the locker room with the 44-38 lead. LeMorta along with
Jeremiah Zitz (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit),
Scotty Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville),
Sage Brown (Cortland, NY/Cortland) and
Pat MacLamore Jr. (Greensboro, NC/Aquinas Institute) all hit big shots in that run.
The Saxons never gave up the lead during the second half.
Stopera and Marshall both had 14 points to follow LeMorta (who's 21 points were mostly made up of his four 3-pointers).
Sam Dagon (Hornell, NY/Hornell) recorded 12 points to round out the double-digit scorers for the Saxons as he went 10-of-12 from the free throw line. Marshall was perfect from the line as he was 6-for-6.
Under the board, Stopera, Brown and
Elliot Bowen (Salamanca, NY/Ellicotville) all had five rebounds as they made up half of the 30 Alfred University rebounds. Seven Saxons registered steals on the evening while Zitz had two. He also recorded the only block for AU.
The Saxons will next head to SUNY Geneseo on Tuesday, November 27 for a 7:30PM tipoff.
