ALBANY, NY – The Alfred University men's soccer team improved in the conference on Saturday afternoon with a victory over The Sage Colleges. The Saxons (5-11, 4-2 Empire 8) defeated the Gators by a score of 2-0 behind the foot of sophomore
Zachary Gloskin (New City, NY/Clarkstown South).
The game went scoreless into the break but the tie was broken early into the second half. In the 54
thminute Gloskin went one on one with a Sage defender and put one into the back of the net to give AU the 1-0 advantage. The game went quiet again for most of the second half until Gloskin struck again at the 81:11 mark to give the Saxons a 2-0 lead, enough to bring home an Empire 8 victory.
Joe Gonzalez (Marion, NY/Marion) had another impressive performance in the net with six saves on his way to shut out.
The win today puts Alfred into second place in the Empire 8 standings and clinches a spot in the playoffs with just one conference game left on the schedule.
"Great effort on the road at Sage by all the lads. A tough trip ended in the Saxons clinching a berth in the playoffs. All players had a huge hand (and foot) in the result, especially Zach Gloskin who scored both goals for the Saxons," Head Coach
Tracy Blake said. "Very proud to take the squad into the playoffs for the first time since 2014 and the first four win season in conference play since 2004. We will try to make it five wins against St. John Fisher on Saturday, which is our senior day and Saxon for Saxon game."
The Saxons will be back in action next Tuesday on the road at Buffalo State with kickoff slated for 7PM.
