ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University men's swimming & diving team opened the 2018 portion of its schedule with a win over Empire 8 foe, Utica College, 184.5-52.5 on Friday afternoon at Lebohner Pool.
The Saxons began the day with a couple of no-contest sweeps in the medley relay and 1,000-yard freestyle. The first race where Utica had someone in the pool was the 200-yard freestyle where first-year
Geno Darin (Boca Raton, FL/Olympic Heights) and senior
Derek Ciraolo (Grand Island, NY/St. Joseph's) finished first and second with times of 1:52.96 and 1:56.25, respectively. The half point for both the Saxons and Pioneers occurred in the next race when first-year
Yunneng Du (Yorktown, VA/Tabb) tied T.J. Tellekamp in the 50-yard freestyle with a matching time of 22.44, both earning 6.5 points for their team.
Senior
Joseph Lawrence (Clarence Center, NY/Clarence) finished the race with a time of 23.28 to take third.
Alfred University got another 1-2 finish in the 200-yard individual medley where senior
Alec Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) and junior
Ethan Zyglocke (Livonia, NY/Livonia) swam times of 2:04.66 and 2:09.62.
Lawrence had a strong win in the 100-yard butterfly as he topped the other swimmers by over four seconds with his 53.81.
Zach Goodwin (Holden, MA/Wachusett) took third in the event with his 58.96, just .55 away from topping Utica's Aaron Gudrian.
The Saxons had yet another 1-2 finish in the 100-yard backstroke as sophomore
Andy Edmister (Belmont, NY/Genesee Valley Central) and Toth swam times of 54.42 and 56.94. Junior
Richard Berger (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) and Zyglocke finished first and second in the 100-yard breaststroke with finishing marks of 1:02.85 and 1:03.46, respectively.
Junior
Christopher Deaver (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) earned a pair of wins on the diving boards, hitting 277.43 on the 1-meter and 292.58 on the 3-meter. Sophomore
Gabriel Smith (Campbell, NY/Campbell-Savona) followed Deaver on the short board with his 217.95.
Alfred University will next travel to LeMoyne College on Thursday, January 18 for a 4PM dual meet.
