ELMIRA, NY – The Alfred University men's soccer team knocked off Elmira College Saturday afternoon, 1-0 in conference play.
Â
The Saxon (3-5-1, 2-0-1 Empire 8) got on the board in the 52nd minute as senior midfielder
Miguel Reyes (Valencia, Venezuela/La Salle) kicked a well-placed ball in front of the net where sophomore forward
Evan Merkey (Webster, NY/Webster Schroder) was able to head the ball in the net for the game's lone goal. Senior goalkeeper
Chris Gutierrez (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) made three saves on the day for his second shutout of the season.
"Another great victory this time on the road in the Empire 8 versus a very strong Elmira team that has always been difficult to beat on their home field," head coach
Tracy Blake said. "Our Saxon spirit was prevalent throughout the whole game. The fantastic goal by Evan [Merkey] was equaled by a top-drawer save from Guti [
Chris Gutierrez] to preserve the win."
Â
Alfred held the advantage in shots 19 (five on goal) while Elmira had nine shots (three on goal). Alfred also held the advantage in corner kicks, 6-2.
"We had opportunities to put the game away before the end but a win away from home is just what we were looking for," Coach Blake said. "We have already started to work on next week when we play at Nazareth on Saturday after our trip to Fredonia on Tuesday."
Â
The Saxons will continue their four-game road trip as they travel to Fredonia on Tuesday, October 3rd, in a non-conference game at 7 pm.
