ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's tennis team opened its 2017-18 season with a 5-4 loss to visiting Oswego State Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Saxons won two of three doubles matches, but fell in four of six matches in singles play.
 
Senior Kevin Volz (Olean, NY/Olean) led the Saxons with a 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 victory in first singles. He also teamed with first-year Ryan Brown (Olean, NY/Olean) to take first doubles, 8-3.
 
"Kevin Volz had a fantastic match," AU head coach Mike Graham said. "He and his (first singles) opponent went the distance and Kevin got the comeback win. It was a pleasure to watch."
 
Alfred's other singles win came from junior Kyle Kemper  (Oswego, NY/Oswego), who took sixth singles, 7-5, 7-6. Junior Peter Smock (Prattsburgh, NY/Prattsburgh) and senior Mike Wisniewski (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville East) won second doubles, 8-6.
 
AU wraps up its two-match fall season Oct. 6 at 3:30 p.m. at Penn State-Behrend.
