UTICA, NY – The Alfred University men's tennis team defeated host Utica College, 8-1, Friday afternoon for the Saxons' first Empire 8 Conference win of the season.
 
AU (3-5, 1-3 Empire 8) took five of six singles matches. Senior Kevin Volz (Olean, NY/Olean) won first singles, 6-2, 6-2; sophomore Peter Smock (Prattsburgh, NY/Prattsburgh) won second singles, 3-6, 6-4, 10-2 in second singles; senior Patrick Brown (Olean, NY/Olean) won third singles, 6-2, 6-0;  sophomore Kyle Kemper (Oswego, NY/Oswego) won fourth singles, 6-3, 6-3; and senior Thomas MacDonald (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) took sixth singles, 6-2, 6-4.
 
Alfred swept doubles play, with Volz and Brown traking first doubles, 8-2; Smock and sophomore Sheldon Palmer (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) winning second doubles, 8-2; and Kemper and MacDonald winning third doubles, 8-1.
 
AU is in action next on Wednesday, April 19, at 4 p.m. at Elmira.
