ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team, playing its home finale, earned its first Empire 8 Conference win of the year Saturday afternoon, topping visiting Utica College, 69-57, in the Galanis Family Arena.
 
Alfred (3-20, 1-13, Empire 8) led 39-25 at the half on the strength of 17 points and nine rebounds from senior forward 
Amanda Off (New Berlin, NY/Unadilla Valley). Playing before a Senior Day crowd, Off sunk seven of 10 shots in the first half, including one three-pointer, and converted both of her free throw attempts.
 
The Saxons made 46 percent of their shots in the first half, while holding the visiting Pioneers to 31 percent shooting. AU out-rebounded Utica, 31-14, and had 10 offensive boards through two quarters.
 
AU pushed its lead to 20 points (50-30) and led 55-44 heading into the final fame. Utica got as close as six points (61-55) with about three minutes left in regulation. That's as close as the Pioneers would get, as the Saxons made their foul shots down the stretch.
 
Off finished with 29 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots to lead AU. She made 12 of 17 shots from the floor and was four-for-four from the line. For the game, the Saxons made 46 percent of their shots and held a 47-36 advantage on the glass.
 
First-year guard 
Jaime Wilcox (Forestville, NY/Pine Valley) added 13 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals, while senior guard 
Maddi Flint (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) had 10 points to go with a game-high six assists. First-year forward 
Bri Hicks (Slaterville Springs, NY/Ithaca) had six points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.
 
Ashley Mayo led Utica (6-17, 4-10 E8) with 20 points and seven rebounds. Rachel Hunter had 13 points and five boards and Ashelyne Babb chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds.
Saturday's win was the first time the Saxons have beaten the Pioneers since January 31, 2014 when Alfred University won, 75-66 on the road.
 
Alfred is in action next on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 6 p.m. at Empire 8 foe Elmira.
