ALFRED, NY – Junior guard
Nick Schmidt (Olean, NY/Olean) and senior guard
Tyler Seelman (Lorton, VA/Hayfield Secondary) combined for 43 points as the Alfred University men's basketball team defeated Stevens Institute of Technology, 107-80, Friday evening at the Galanis Family Arena.
Schmidt scored 25 points and went 6-for-7 from beyond the three-point line and added three assists. Seelman scored 18 points and shot well from beyond the arc, going 4-for-6 from long range. His four three-pointers gave him 248 for his career, a new school record that broke the previous mark held by Brian Quinlan. With the lopsided win, the Saxons earned revenge for an 81-49 loss at Stevens on Jan. 14.
As a team Alfred shot 64 percent (14-for-22) from beyond the arc. Freshman guard
Sam Dagon (Hornell, NY/Hornell) had a nice all-around game as he finished with 14 points, five rebounds and five assists. The Saxons (9-13, 6-7 Empire 8) outscored the Ducks, 50-22, in the paint and held a 16-3 advantage in second chance points.
Stevens (17-5, 100-3 E8) was led by
Spencer Cook as he had a team high 20 points, with
Jayson Winick adding 18 points.
This was Alfred's first 100-point home game since Feb. 22, 2014, against Ithaca College.
Alfred is next in action on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 4 p.m., when the Saxons host Utica in their home finale.
