ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team lost to visiting La Roche College Thursday evening, 82-54 at the Galanis Family Arena.
 
The Saxons (1-5, 0-0 Empire 8) were led offensively by sophomore guard Jamie Wilcox (Forestville, NY/Pine Valley) as she finished with 12 points while forwards Bri Hicks (Burlington, VT/Ithaca) and Sam Pierre-Louis (Wheatley Heights, NY/Half Hollow Hills West) each finished with nine. Wilcox and first-year guard Amanda Figueroa (Cypress, TX/Rosehill Christain) each grabbed six rebounds to lead Alfred.
 
The Redhawks jumped out to an early 4-0 lead to begin the game before junior guard Katlyn Boland (New York, NY/A. Phillip Randolph) got Alfred on the board by knocking down both of her free throw attempts just two minutes into the action. La Roche extended its lead to seven as Darrian Johnson converted her three-point attempt to give them the 9-2 edge. The Saxons answered as Pierre-Louis drove the lane to convert the layup opportunity.
 
With 3:30 remaining in the quarter, Alfred found themselves in the hole trailing 14-6 before Wilcox knocked down both of her free throws to make it 14-8. Pierre-Louis would help Alfred inch closer, hitting the backend of her free throw attempts to make the score 14-9 with 0:16 remaining in the quarter. Jenna Cole pushed the lead back to seven as she hit both of her free attempts.
 
La Roche was led offensively by Johnson as she finished with 19 points while Cole added 18 and Dalezsa Regan with 16. Nia Thomas grabbed seven rebounds with Cole and Shawn Kirby-Brown grabbing six apiece.
 
Alfred held the edge in second chance points with 12 points while La Roche had nine points. La Roche held the advantage in bench points with 22 points while Alfred had 14 points.
 
The Saxons hit the road as they travel to Miami, FL to take on Theil College on Tuesday December 19 at 8 PM in the first round of the Hoopmia Holiday Shootout. The Saxons then close out the road trip as they play against Gettysburg College on Wednesday December 20 at 4 PM.
