MIAMI, FL – The Alfred University women's basketball team won its first game of the HOOPS Mia D3 Holiday Shootout against Thiel College, 68-57 on Tuesday evening.

"This was a good team win for us," Head Coach
Monique McLean said. "As we get closer to conference play we needed a close game like this to build our confidence."

The Saxons (2-5, 0-0 Empire 8) were led by the 18-point effort of
Jamie Wilcox (Forestville, NY/Pine Valley) as well as
Katlyn Boland (New York, NY/A. Phillip Randolph) and
Amanda Figueroa (Cypress, TX/Rosehill Christian) who both put up 11 points. Boland and Figueroa were near identical in their stat lines as they tied in score, tied in rebounds with eight (Figueroa led the Saxons with three offensive rebounds) and they tied in assists with four.
Chloe Kottwitz (Bolivar, NY/Bolivar-Richburg) and Wilcox also had four assists as a team-high.

Alfred University was only outscored in the first quarter, being down 15-13. In the second quarter, Thiel committed the majority of its 18 team fouls, leading to the Saxons tallying 18 points and only allowing 15 for the first half lead.

The Saxons and Tomcats both put up the strongest scoring efforts in the third quarter as Alfred outscored Theil , 21-19 before the Saxons doubled the Tomcats in the final quarter, 16-8.

As a team, Alfred University had 17 assists whereas Theil only connected for nine.

The Saxons will next round out their South Beach stay on Wednesday afternoon against Gettysburg College at 4PM.
