HAMBURG, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team fell to host Hilbert College Saturday afternoon, 80-41 at the Hafner Rec Center.
The Saxons (1-3, 0-0 Empire 8) were led offensive by sophomore
Niasia Boyd (Rankin, PA/Propel Andrew Street) as she had 10 points to go along with seven rebounds (four offense, three defense) to also lead the team. Junior
Katlyn Boland (New York, NY/A. Phillip Randolph) had active hands on the defensive end of the court, causing five turnovers.
With both teams trying to find their offensive identities, Boland scored the first basketball for the Saxons followed by a free throw mad by sophomore forward
Bri Hicks (Burlington ,VT/Ithaca) and a jumper by first-year
Lyndsey McCoy (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburgh Central) to give them the 5-3 lead with just over four minutes remaining in the first quarter. Hilbert was able to take the lead after
Kelsi Ebert made the first of her two free throw attempts. The Hawks closed out the quarter on a 7-3 run after first-year guard cut the deficit to two after she cashed in her three point shot off the assist from first-year guard
Amanda Figueroa ().
In the second quarter, trailing 18-14, sophomore guard
Jamie Wilcox (Forestville, NY/Pine Valley) converted an and-one opportunity to be down one with 4:03 remaining in the first half. To close out the half, Hilbert went on a 11-2 run, giving them the 30-21 halftime lead.
For the Hawks,
Emily Gawlak led the team in points as she finished with 19 with
Morgan McNeill having 12. Gawlak also led the team in rebounds with seven.
The Saxons are next in action on November 28 as they travel to SUNY Geneseo in a non-conference match-up at 7 PM.
