ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team captured their first win of the 2017-18 season, defeating visiting Fredonia 73-69 Tuesday evening at the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.

Sophomore guard
Jamie Wilcox (Forestville, NY/Pine Valley) went a solid 12-for-14 from the free throw line, including making her last eight attempts to help capture the win.

For the Saxons (1-2, 0-0 Empire 8), Wilcox finished the game with 28 points with five rebound and five steals. First-year guards
Amanda Figueroa (Cypress, TX/Rosehill Christain) and
Lyndsey McCoy (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburgh Central) played vital rolls as well, scoring 18 and 11 points respectively. McCoy also grabbed seven boards (five offensive, two defensive). Junior guard
Katlyn Boland (New York, NY/A. Phillip Randolph) also grabbed seven rebounds and set up her teammates with good looks as she finished with seven assists.

"This was a great team win for us," said Head Coach
Monique McLean. "Our first-year guards Amanda and Lyndsey really stepped up big for us in the first half. I was very impressed with our ability to get stops and scores when we really needed them late in the game. We stayed poised and fought hard to pull out the close victory!"

Alfred found themselves trailing early, 8-2 with 6:36 remaining in the first before they went on a 8-2 run. Boland was able to find Figueroa for the three point shot to cut the deficit. Wilcox converted on her layup attempt to make the score 10-7 with 4:56 remaining in the first. Boland knocked down the backend of her two free throw attempts to come within two. Sophomore guard
Niasia Boyd (Rankin, PA/Propel Andrew Street) tied in up with her layup with 3:35 remaining. The Saxons found themselves trailing with 2:01 remaining before going on a 7-5 run to close out the quarter, powered by a three pointer by Figueroa and two free throws from McCoy.

The Saxons biggest lead of the half came at the 6:23 mark as they led the Blue Devils, 26-18 after Sophomore forward
Bri Hicks (Burlington, VT/Ithaca) converted he layup attempt. Fredonia would go on a 17-7 run the go into halftime with the lead, 35-33.

The teams coming out of the intermission were able to keep pace with one another, trading bucket for bucket. Fredonia took the momentum with 2:06 remaining in the quarter as
Jenna Einink knocked down her three point attempt, giving them the 47-45 advantage. The Blue Devil lead would grow, going into the final frame with a 55-47 lead.

After a fast break layup by Einink to give Fredonia the 59-53 lead with 7:32 to go in regulation, Wilcox would answer with two three pointers to tie the game. Einink and
Jacque Law would score back-to-back layups to give Fredonia the four point advantage. Wilcox would put Alfred on top for good with a pair of free throw with 40 seconds remaining.

The Blue Devils were led by Einink with 24 points and nine rebounds.
Anna Chiacchia added 15 points and three assists, respectively.

The Saxons took advantage of second chance opportunities, 11-6 as well as bench scoring, 13-9. The Blue Devils controlled the paint, outscoring Alfred, 28-18.

The Saxons next travel to Hamburg, NY to take on host Hilbert College this Saturday, November 25 with tip-off at 4 PM.
