ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University men's soccer team loss to No. 13 nationally-ranked Buffalo State, 3-0 on Tuesday evening in Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (4-10-1, 3-2-1 Empire 8) held the Bengals (14-1-3, 6-0-3 SUNYAC) scoreless for the first half hour before Buffalo State broke the scoreboard silence with a goal from
Barak Benyhuda in the 33rd minute of play.
"Fantastic effort today from the lads against No. 13 Buffalo State played well they scored an unbelievable goal to put them one-nil up," Head Coach
Tracy Blake said. "The game until that point, I thought, was a 50-50 game until that time and then they got a second one right before halftime."
Buffalo State's
Robert Williamson, along with a pass from
Luke Pavone, tacked on the Bengals' second goal in the final minutes of the first half, resulting in a 2-0 halftime lead.
The visitors tucked the game away with a final goal at the start of the second half. Junior
Brian Larkin-Gero (Chagrin Falls, OH/Kenston) had the Saxons' lone shot on goal on the day as him and the rest of Alfred University tallied six total shots. Buffalo State had 15 shots with eight on goal. The five that never found net were stopped by senior goalkeeper,
Chris Gutierrez (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) who played all 90 minutes in goal.
"The lads played hard especially with the injuries and the suspensions we had," Coach Blake said. "We had six or seven players out today but I truly believe if we give this effort we showed tonight on Saturday, we'll be in the playoffs and playing on November 3rd and 4th."
The Saxons will round out their season on Saturday, October 28 at 7 pm. They will travel to St. John Fisher College as they look to punch their ticket to the Empire 8 playoffs in November.
