BROCKPORT, NY – The Alfred University women's tennis team dropped a heart-breaker to The College at Brockport on Monday evening at the Brockport Tennis Courts, 4-5.

The Saxons (1-11, 1-6 Empire 8) were on top of the Golden Eagles, 2-1 after doubles. The No. 1 team of junior
Inda Gillett (South Kortright, NY/Delaware Academy Central) and sophomore
Amber Smith (Prattsburgh, NY/Prattsburgh Central) topped
Zoe Sharp and
Nina Cabahug easily by a score of 8-1. The other Saxon doubles point came from sophomore
Miranda Sakala (Olean, NY/Olean) and first-year
Lauren Boshart (Oswego, NY/Oswego) at No. 3 where they defeated
Phoebe Morse and
Jennifer Kiely, 8-6.

"With missing our first and fifth singles players, our team fought very hard and just fell short of a win," Head Coach
Mike Graham said. "I'm extremely proud of how everyone played."

In singles, Sakala and Boshart were the two Alfred University players to come away with victories. Sakala bested Sharp at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-4 while Boshart fought a tough first set but then got the win in the second as she topped
Elizabeth Bean, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.

Gillett had a close No. 1 singles match against
Kelsey Shanahan but fell, 3-6, 4-6.

The Saxons will next host Roberts Wesleyan University on Wednesday, October 4 at 4 pm in their final home match of the 2017 fall season.
