Reyes nets two as Alfred fights back to defeat Houghton in OT

ALFRED, NY – Senior midfielder Miguel Reyes (Valencia, Venezuela/La Salle) scored the equalizer and game-winning goals as the Alfred University men's soccer team defeated visiting Houghton College 3-2 Saturday afternoon in double-overtime.

The Saxons (4-7-1, 3-1-1 Empire 8) were able to get on the board first as first-year defender Sheamus Doyle (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) was able to collect the ball that went off the crossbar from the ensuing throw-in in the 26th minute.

The Highlanders were able to respond when Julius Klohr tied the game up in the 47th minute while Ben Munkittrick pushed the score 2-1 off the assist from Noah Ewing.

With emotions running high after Houghton was called for a yellow card; Reyes scored his first goal at the 82nd minute mark off a free kick that went to the top left corner of the net, just past the outreached goalkeeper's glove to knot things up at 2-2. With both teams playing very tough defense, the game went into double-overtime as Reyes once took advantage of the penalty kick in the 105th minute.

"I thought we played really well in the first half, playing like a unit," said head coach Tracy Blake. "We made two defensive errors trying to dribble the ball out of our half and Houghton was able to capitalize off those mistakes. We had to dig into our Saxon pride, our Saxon spirit, to be able to become one unit and execute. Kudos to the lads as they worked as a unit."

The Saxons held the slight advantage in shot attempts with 18 (eight on goal) to the Highlanders 17 (11 on goal). Houghton had the edge in corners kicks, 6-3.

Senior goalkeeper Chris Gutierrez (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) went the distance on net, making nine saves on 11 shots faced. Caleb Loew went the distance for Houghton, making five saves on eight shots faced.

Alfred is back in action next Tuesday, October 17th as they host Montclair St. at 5 p.m.
