ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team pulled away from visiting Houghton College down the stretch to come away with the 57-50 victory Thursday evening at the Galanis Family Arena.
Â
The Saxons (7-10, 4-4 E8) trailed going into halftime by four as Alfred was held scoreless for the last 3:47 of the first period. Senior guard
Tyler Seelman (Lorton, VA/Hayfield Secondary) paced Alfred in the first half as he scored 12 points.
Â
Alfred and Houghton went toe-to-toe with one another in the beginning minutes of the second half as they each traded baskets. The Saxons were able to gain the lead with 13:23 left to play as junior guard
Nick Schmidt (Olean, NY/Olean) drained a wide open three. The Saxons didn't trail for the rest of the game, although the Highlanders were able to cut the deficit to one on several occasions. Both Seelman and Schmidt came up big down the stretch as they were both able to convert on their one-and-one free throw attempts
Â
Seelman finished the game with 22 points while junior forward
Dalton Cousin (Sherrill, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) and senior forward
Eric Adams (Readington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) each finished with six rebounds.
Â
Johnathan Stowe led the Highlanders with a double-double (14 points, 12 rebounds).
Â
The win was Alfred's second straight in Empire 8 play following a four-game conference skid that ended with last Thursday's win at home over Elmira. The Saxons are in action this Saturday, January 28, at 4 p.m. at Nazareth College.
