ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to visiting seventh-ranked Rochester Tuesday evening at Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (6-2-1) held their own as they played the Yellowjackets tough throughout the contest, and each team tallied five shots during a scoreless first half. Midway through the second half, Rochester's
Bryce Ikeda scored the game's only goal in 21 minutes through a scrum in front of the AU goal following a corner kick. The initial shot was blocked by an AU defender on the goal line, but the ball caromed right to Ikeda, who struck a hard shot into the lower-right corner.
The Saxons and the Yellowjackets (7-0-1) each recorded seven shots and the Saxons held a slight 5-3 advantage in the corner kicks. Junior goalie
Chris Gutierrez (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) recorded three saves in the loss. Rochester's
Patrick Conway earned the win with two saves on the night.
Alfred is in action Saturday, Oct. 1, at 3 p.m., at Empire 8 opponent Houghton College.
