Five Saxons Score in Loss to Utica

YouTube Recap | Play of the Week

ALFRED, NY—The Alfred University women's lacrosse team fell 17-7 despite finishing the game on a 4-2 run in the final nine minutes of play.

Five Saxons scored in the game with junior Tracy Johnston (Akron, NY/Akron) and sophomore Miranda Gilbert (Watertown, NY/Watertown) netting two goals each. The remaining three goals came from junior Megan Wendt (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) and freshman Morgan Timmerman (Cortland, NY/Cortland) and Olivia Cronmiller (Livonia, NY/Livonia).

Rebecca Plunkett scored a game-high four goal for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers opened the game on a 12-0 run before AU got on the board after Cronmiller found Timmerman in front of the net and the young attack player rattled the shot into the goal with 7:27 left on the clock in the half. Gilbert scored under four minutes later and her goal was supplemented once more by Johnston who received a pass from Timmerman who caused a turnover and looped the ball over the back of the cage to the eagerly waiting Johnston. The half ended with Utica on top 13-3.

Once again the Pioneers opened up the second half on a run, scoring three times before AU netted its first goal. Cronmiller, Wendt and Gilbert scored in rapid succession over five minutes of play to bring the game to 16-6. Utica scored twice more before Johnston caused a turnover at midfield, collected the ground ball and buried the ball in the back of the net to round of the scoring on the afternoon, 17-7.

Sophomore goalie Shannon Gray (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) led the Saxons with 11 ground balls (career-high). Gray also accumulated 10 saves between the pipes. Cronmiller caused two turnovers for the Saxons to accompany five draw controls.

AU is off until Saturday, remaining at home to face Ithaca College in Yunevich Stadium at 4PM.
