HOUGHTON, NY—The Alfred University women's lacrosse team (4-10, E8 0-5) fell to Houghton College 8-5 Wednesday evening on the road, despite holding Houghton to only three goals in the first half.

Miranda Gilbert (Watertown, NY/Watertown) scored two goals for the Saxons in the loss. Juniors
Tracy Johnston (Akron, NY/Akron),
Hayley Katz (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater Raritan), and
Megan Wendt (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) scored a goal each. Wendt and Johnston also added an assist each.

The Highlanders jumped out to an early 3-1 lead over the Saxons until Wendt brought the game within one goal with 17:46 to go in the first half. Gilbert knotted the game up, 3-3, with only 2:31 left on the clock before the intermission. The game remained tied into the break.

Houghton scored twice in less than a minute early in the second half taking a 5-3 lead. AU bounced back with goals from Gilbert and Johnston to level the game at five. However, the Highlanders kept the Saxons off the board for the remainder of the game while netting three more goals to earn their first Empire 8 win of the year.

In addition to leading the Saxons in scoring, Gilbert collected three ground balls and caused two turnovers. Sophomore
Sarah Thomann (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties Senior) wrangled two ground balls in the contest and forced two caused turnovers.

Shannon Gray (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) accumulated 19 saves over 60 minutes of play.

The Saxons return home on Sunday to take on Utica College at 1PM in Yunevich Stadium.
