Saxons Fall To SUNY Canton Despite Draw Control Advantage

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's lacrosse team fell to non-conference visitor, SUNY Canton, on Sunday afternoon at Yunevich Stadium, 11-4.
 
Sophomore midfielder Miranda Gilbert (Watertown, NY/Watertown) led the way in points with two from her goal and her assist. She was joined by junior attackers Megan Wendt (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) and Tracy Johnston (Akron, NY/Akron) as well as freshman attack Morgan Timmerman (Cortland, NY/Cortland Junior-Senior) on the scoring front who all chipped in a goal each.
 
Senior Rachel Ball (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) added an assist.
 
Canton was the first on the board at 28:09 in the first half but Alfred followed with Johnston's goal from Ball to tie the game, 1-1 at 26:16 before the Kangaroos went on a seven-goal streak to close out the half.
 
The Saxons (4-9, 0-4 Empire 8) stayed on par with the visitors in the second half, scoring three and allowing three.
 
Sophomore goalie Shannon Gray (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) had her seventh game with double-digit saves (13) and her seventh game with .500 save percentage or higher. Her freshman season she had five games with .500 or more as Gray continues to build her personal best season. She faced 39 shots in total on Sunday and is now 4-8 on the year.
 
Gray also led the Saxons in ground balls with seven ground balls for a new career-high while also forcing a turnover.
 
Gilbert recovered the most draw controls on the day with five while senior Brianna Dudick (Somers, NY/Somers) followed with three of the Saxons' 14. Canton totaled three draw controls in total.
 
Senior Kerry Mack (Weedsport, NY/Jordan-Elbridge) led AU with three caused turnovers.
 
SUNY Canton led the advantage in turnovers, forcing 16 of AU's 38 while only giving up possession 19 times. Alfred University caused nine of those.
 
The Saxons will next compete in their final road matchup of the season as they take the short drive to Houghton College for Empire 8 action on Wednesday, April 13 for a 7:00 pm game start.
