AURORA, NY—Sophomore
Miranda Gilbert (Watertown, NY/Watertown) and freshman
Morgan Timmerman (Cortland, NY/Cortland) scored four goals each in a 15-9 win over Wells College on the road Sunday afternoon.
In addition to the young attack duo, juniors
Megan Wendt (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) and
Tracy Johnston (Akron, NY/Akron) notched a hat trick each. Senior
Rachel Ball (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) scored the remaining goal for the Saxons (3-3, E8 0-0) who are off to their best start since 2013 where they went 3-3 over the first six games. The 2013 team finished the season with a 5-7 record.
Freshman
Olivia Cronmiller (Livonia, NY/Livonia) distributed the ball for Alfred University, chalking up three assists in the contest. Johnston claimed two assists on the day as junior
Leah Ellithorpe (Camillus, NY/West Genesee), Ball and Timmerman had one assist each.
AU opened the game on a 4-1 run over the Express in the first 13 minutes with Timmerman leading the way with two goals in that period. Wells scored back-to-back goals following the run to bring the game within one with 14:50 left in the half. The Saxons rattled off six goals over the remaining minutes of the half to increase the lead to 10-3 heading to the intermission.
The Express scored six times in the second half, but it was to no avail, as AU was able to keep pace with five goals. Wells was within striking distance with 6:52 to go in the game, down only three goals, 12-9. However, with a combination of staunch defense and high-powered offense, the Saxons increased the lead with three goals down the stretch to close the win, 15-9.
Senior
Kerry Mack (Weedsport, NY/Jordan-Elbridge), Gilbert and Cronmiller all led AU with three groundballs each. Four Saxons claimed two groundballs each. Cronmiller and Mack also paced AU with two caused turnovers apiece.
Sophomore
Shannon Gray (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) earned her third win of the year with six saves over 60 minutes of play.
The Saxons remain on the road for their next game, traveling to Wilkes-Barre, PA to take on Wilkes University on Tuesday at 6PM.
