Box ScoreONEONTA, NY – The Alfred University men's tennis team travelled to Oneonta Saturday to take on Hartwick College in the Saxons' Empire 8 Conference opener and came away with an 8-1 victory.
Alfred (2-9, 1-0 E8) swept doubles play, with seniors
Connor Doud (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) and
Matt Baloga (Goshen, NY/Goshen) teaming to take first doubles, 8-4. Junior
Patrick Brown (Olean, NY/Olean) and senior Kevin Volz (Olean, NY/Olean) won second doubles (8-4); and freshman
Kyle Kemper (Oswego, NY/Oswego) and junior
Kyle Merrifield (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) took third doubles, 8-4.
The Saxons took five of six singles matches, with Doud winning in first singles, 6-1, 6-1, and Baloga taking third singles, 6-3, 6-4. Volz won fourth singles, 6-1, 6-3; Brown claimed fifth singles, 7-5, 6-3; and freshman
Sean Benoit (Gasport, NY/Barker) came out on top in sixth singles, 6-2, 6-2.
AU is in action next on Tuesday, March 29, when the Saxons host Lycoming in a 3 p.m. non-conference matchup.
