Miranda Gilbert (Watertown, NY/Watertown) paced the Saxons with four and three goals, respectively, in defeating Keuka College, 12-7.
Alfred University fell behind in the opening minutes of the matchup, 2-0, when the WolfPack scored in the third and fourth minutes. AU was able to get on the board when junior
Leah Ellithorpe (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) found Gilbert for a goal in the seventh minute. The Saxons continued with two more goals in rapid succession from junior
Tracy Johnston (Akron, NY/Akron) and freshman
Olivia Cronmiller (Livonia, NY/Livonia). Ellithorpe assisted on the goal to Johnston, chipping in on her second goal in less than a minute.
Keuka College stormed back to take the lead, 5-3, after scoring three goals in a row. However, the Saxons refused to stand down heading into the half and rattled off three goals in the last five minutes to take the lead into the locker room, 6-5.
The WolfPack was the first team on the board in the second half back-to-back goals in with 28:21 and 25:44 to go in the game, respectively, and earning back the lead for the third time in the game. However, the staunch AU defense did not allow another goal for the remainder of the matchup, giving the offense the opportunity to strike.
After allowing the two early goals in the second half, the Saxons scored six consecutive times en route to victory down the stretch. Among the goal-scorers were freshman
Morgan Timmerman (Cortland, NY/Cortland), Wendt (scoring twice), Gilbert (scoring twice) and Cronmiller. Senior
Rachel Ball (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) assisted a player-up goal to Wendt while Timmerman assisted Cronmiller.
The Saxons dominated play, taking twice as many shots (24-12) as the WolfPack and putting 19-of-24 (79.2%) of their shots on goal. AU also doubled-up Keuka on draw controls, 14-7.
Gilbert led the Saxons in groundballs (4) and caused turnovers (2). Ellithorpe managed three groundballs in the contest along with four draw controls.
Sophomore
Shannon Gray (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) played the entire game in net for the Saxons, making four saves on 11 shots faced, earning her first win of the season.
AU (1-2, E8 0-0) is back in action on Thursday when it travels to Hilbert College to take on the Hawks at 4PM.
