Women's Tennis Goes 1-3 During Weekend Tourney With Win Over Medaille

BUFFALO, NY -- The Alfred University women's tennis team picked up its first win of the spring portion of the 2015-16 season with a 7-1 scoring over Medaille College on Sunday during the Daemen/Medaille Invite.

Both doubles pairs of Rachel Cook (Youngstown, OH/Laurel Springs) and Emma Jackson (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) at No. 1 and Kallie Clapper (Conklin, NY/Susquehanna Valley) and Emma Siemer (Owego, NY/Owego Free Academy) at No. 3 picked up 8-1 wins for an early Saxons lead of 2-1. From there on, no player from Alfred University loss their singles matches.

No. 2 singles featuring Jackson and Medaille's Emily Insinna went with no result while No. 4 Siemer and No. 5 Inda Gillett (South Kortright, NY/Delaware Academy Central) played one-set matches with winning scores of 8-0 and 8-3, respectively over Kyla Krathaus and Cho Thiri Tun. Nurila Kambar (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Republic Physics and Mathematics School) topped Karen Glomb at No. 6 singles by taking it to three sets with a score of 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5).

Both Cook at No. 1 and Clapper at No. 3 played two-set matches toping Liz Barrett 7-5, 6-4 and Colleen Voigt 6-1, 6-2, respectively.

Earlier in the day, the Saxons fell to Daemen College, 2-7. Jackson and Gillett were the two winners of the day. Jackson went three sets at No. 2 singles against Hayle Scanlan for a 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 win. Gillett's opponent at No. 5 singles was forced to retire during the second set with a 7-6, 3-0 score in favor of AU's freshman.

Saturday night, Alfred University began the weekend with a 4-5 loss to Rochester Institute of Technology. Jackson and Cook were the lone winners in doubles at No. 1 with an 8-5 victory over Geanna Heaviland and Kelsie Redburn. Cook then topped Heaviland 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles while Jackson defeated Marie Jubert 7-5, 6-0 at No. 2. Siemer scored the fourth point with her 5-7, 6-4, 12-10 No. 4 singles win over Alyssa Hering.

The duo of Cook and Jackson were also selected to the All-Tournament Team.

The Saxons will next compete in their spring break trip starting March 6 and ending on March 8.
