HOUGHTON, NY—The Alfred University women's basketball team fell to Houghton College, 54-52, on a last second shot on the road Thursday evening.
 
The affair was tight throughout as the Saxons and the Highlanders battled to a 27-27 tie in the first 20 minutes of the game. Freshman Chanice Battle (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) paved the way for AU with 10 points in the opening half. Junior Amanda Off (New Berlin, NY/Unadilla Valley) added eight points and four rebounds.
 
The Saxons shot 10-of-26 (38.5%) in the first half while holding Houghton to only 10-of-32 (31.3%) shooting. AU also hit 4-of-9 (44.4%) of its shot from behind the arc while maintaining a tight perimeter defense to hold the Highlanders to only 2-of-6 (33.3%) shooting from downtown.
 
The second half was more of the same as the Saxons outshot the Highlanders 35.4% to 29.4% from the field. However, Houghton managed to get the ball for the last shot of the contest and Esther Webb nailed the jumper with 1.1 seconds to go to give the Highlanders the lead and eventually the victory, 54-52.
 
Off and Battle finished with 15 and 10 points, respectively. Battle led the Saxons with eight rebounds, the second highest total in a game during her career. Off and sophomore Mckaylee Croll (Perry, NY/Perry) had six rebounds each. Croll chipped in with nine points during the game.
 
AU (2-22, E8 1-14) returns home on Saturday to take on Elmira College at 4PM for the season finale.
