ALFRED, NY – Senior guard
Julian Reinhart (Hornell, NY/Hornell) dropped 30 points to help the Alfred University men's basketball team overcome an early deficit and defeat Hilbert College, 92-88.
Reinhart played a great all-around game as he converted on 11-o-13 free throw attempts to go along eight rebounds. Sophomore forward
Sage Brown (Cortland, NY/Cortland) recorded a double-double coming off the bench as he finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds for Alfred.
Guard
Jalen Brown led the way for the Hawks as he had 29 points and forward
Derrek Carman had a double-double scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, respectively.
The Saxons (3-2, E8 0-0) found themselves in early trouble as the Hawks started on a 9-0 run in the first 2:15 of the game. Hilbert pushed their lead to 11 points at the 11:21 mark as the score was 25-14. Alfred would close the deficit by two as
Reinhart made the layup to give Hilbert the lead, 34-32. The Hawks went into halftime up, 43-39.
The Saxons came out into the second half fired up and gain their first lead of the game when
Brown made the layup off a pass by junior guard
Nick Schmidt (Olean, NY/Olean) with 11:35 left to play in regulation. Both teams made crucial free throws down the stretch to extend the game into overtime with the score tied, 79-79.
Both teams traded baskets in the overtime period until
Reinhart came up clutch in the late seconds as he made all five free throw attempts at the charity stripe. The game was put on ice as senior guard
Tyler Seelman (Lorton, VA/Hayfield Secondary) made both of his free throws to give the Saxons the win.
Alfred had a huge contribution from the bench as they outscored Hilbert's, 37-16, and also had the advantage in second chance points, 15-7.
The Saxons are in action next Tuesday, November 29th, as they take on Buffalo State at 7 p.m.
