Dalton Cousin (Sherrill, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Alfred University men's basketball team dropped its season opener at Wells College, 74-66, Tuesday evening.
Cousin shot nine-of-15 from the field and one-for-two from the foul line. Senior guard
Tyler Seelman (Lorton, VA/Hayfield Secondary) chipped in 10 points along with four assists, while sophomore guard
Sage Brown (Cortland, NY/Cortland) added 13 points and four rebounds off the bench.
Both teams came out strong into the first half of play as there were eight lead changes and six ties. The Saxons had the lead at the 1:22 mark when Brown converted both of his free throw attempts to make the game 33-32.
Jordyn Tyler knocked down a three to put the Express back on top heading into halftime with the lead, 35-33. Wells came into the second converting a three point jumper to increase their lead 38-33 as that would be the closest the Saxons would be for the rest of the game.
AU shot 25-70 (35.7%) from the floor and 11-15 (73.3%) from the free throw line. Alfred had the slight advantage in rebounds (37-36) and dominated second chance points (17-10), bench points (27-12) and points in the paint (36-24). The Express had the advantage in fast break points, 6-2.
The Saxons (0-1, E8 0-0) are in action this Friday, Nov. 18, as they hit the road to play University of Rochester in the Chuck Resler Tournament at 6 p.m.
