HOUGHTON, NY – The Alfred University women's tennis team lost a close 5-4 decision to host Houghton College Tuesday afternoon in Empire 8 Conference action.
 
AU (4-9, 2-5 Empire 8) took two of three doubles matches before dropping four of six in singles play.
 
In doubles, AU got wins from sophomore Inda Gillett (South Kortright, NY/Delaware Academy) and junior Sarah Grace (Rochester, NY/Penfield), 8-4 in second doubles; and freshman Miranda Sakala (Olean, NY/Olean) and sophomore Rachel Pera (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) 8-6 in third doubles.
 
Sophomore Emma Siemer (Owego, NY/Owego Free Academy) won her second singles match, 6-4, 6-0, while sophomore Nurila Kambar (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Republic Physics and Mathematics School) claimed a 6-2, 7-5 win in sixth singles.
 
The Saxons are in action next on Friday, Oct. 7, at 3 p.m. at home against non-league foe Penn State-Behrend. AU wraps up its fall season on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 1 p.m. at home against E8 opponent Utica.
