ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's soccer team defeated visiting Fredonia Tuesday evening by the score of 2-1.
The Saxons (7-3-1) got in the scoring column early. In the third minute, junior midfielder/defensemen
Jesse Litchman (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) attempted a shot that was initially saved by Fredonia goalie
Ty Bentham. Junior midfielder/forward
Kyle Craver (Great Falls, VA/The Field School) was there to cash in, making the game 1-0. Litchman was credited with the assist.
The Blue Devils scored in the 31
st minute when defender Matt Casey found the back of the net to tie it up heading into halftime.
In the 59
th minute, senior midfielder
Richard Lander (Narrowsburg, NY/Sullivan West) scored the game-winning goal off of great passing from senior defensemen
James Piombino (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) and freshman forward
Evan Merkey (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder). It was Lander's third game-winning goal of the season.
The Saxons outshot the Blue Devils, 15-6, and also had the advantage in corner kicks, 5-4.
Junior goalie
Chris Gutierrez (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) made three saves to earn the win. Bentham made four saves in taking the loss for the Blue Devils.
Alfred is in action this Saturday, Oct.8, at 1 p.m. as they host Empire 8 foe St. John Fisher.
