ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University women's soccer team has earned another Empire 8 Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week selection from another first year student-athlete in
Lexi Riffelbach (Clifton Park, NY/Catholic Central) as made official in an announcement on Monday afternoon.
Riffelbach earned her second career game-winning goal in the 3-2 Empire 8 win over the Elmira College Soaring Eagles on Saturday. Junior teammate
Leigha Allen (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) drove the ball against one defender for almost 30 yards to just to the right of the goal box before making the cross pass in between two defenders and the goalie where Riffelbach delivered the pass to the back corner as the Saxons would go on to win its first Empire 8 victory since 2012's 1-0 win over Utica.
Riffelbach also scored the first goal of the game on Saturday when fellow first year
Amanda Roberts (Amherst, NY/Amherst) played a clearing pass to her (after deflecting off the head of Allen) in which she drove it, shot and gave Alfred University the 1-0 early lead. Earlier in the week, she had one goal and one assist in a 3-0 shutout of Pitt-Bradford and the Saxons' first road win of the 2016 season. In total, Riffelbach took seven shots on the week with four on goal in her 84 minutes of play.
Earlier in the season, on September 12, Roberts also earned the Offensive Player of the Week from the Empire 8.
Riffelbach and the Saxons will next make the trek to Rochester, NY to continue Empire 8 play against the Golden Flyers of Nazareth College on Tuesday, October 4 with a 7:00 pm start.
