Race of the WeekALFRED, NY -- The two seniors on the Alfred University men's swimming and diving team,
Jake Olson (Dansville, NY/Dansville) and
Sheldon Vosburgh (Canajoharie, NY/Canajoharie), ended their four-year career in the Lebohner Pool as the Saxons topped Utica College 153-78 on Friday afternoon.
The two seniors were honored in pre-meet ceremonies with words of praise from head coach,
Brian Striker, gifts from their fellow teammates and having a seniors-only, "final" start from the blocks with the women's swimming and diving team's seniors,
Kelsey McRill and
Sarah Weigel. All four seniors started off of one block at the same time to add some humor for the crowd and their teammates.
Olson claimed a first-place solo win to end his collegiate career in the 50 Freestyle with a time of 23.03. The time topped his previous personal best of 23.68 which stood since the Ithaca College Invite back in November, 2012.
Joseph Lawrence (Clarence Center, NY/Clarence) and
Derek Ciraolo (Grand Island, NY/St. Joseph's) finished second and third in the event with times of 23.53 and 24.12, respectively.
Olson also earned a second place in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 57.19. The senior started his final home meet with a first place win in the 200 Medley Relay alongside of
Richard Berger (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz), Lawrence and
Patrick Brown with a time of 1:43.05.
Vosburgh also began his final meet in McLane Fitness Center during the 200 Medley Relay. He teamed with
Zachary Goodwin (Holden, MA/Wachusett),
Ethan Zyglocke (Livonia, NY/Livonia) and
Michael Guarglia (Hornell, NY/Hornell) for a third place, 1:47.29 finish.
Vosburgh also had a solo win on the day in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 5:16.81. He was immediately followed by fellow Saxon,
Alec Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) who swam a 5:18.70. The senior claimed a second place finish in the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 2:12.94 which is a new personal best as he beat out his 2:15.11 during a dual-meet with Pitt-Bradford in January of 2013.
Toth added to his distance swims with a win in the 1,000 Freestyle with a time of 10:48.52. He finished his day by teaming with
Jack Traynor (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill),
Andrew Grant (Akron, NY/Akron) and Ciraolo in the 200 Freestyle Relay for a first place, 1:33.60 win.
Christopher Deaver (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) and
Seth Steele (Crossville, TN/Cicero-North Syracuse) earned a combined 13 points for the Saxons on the 1-Meter board. Deaver put together a six-dive list that resulted in him earning a score of 302.00 while Steele topped his previous personal best of six dives off the short board with a score of 165.15. His previous personal best was a score of 159.30 against Le Moyne just two days ago.
The duo repeated their point-scoring performances on the tall board. Deaver qualified for the NCAA Regionals on the 1-Meter board on Wednesday against Le Moyne with his 309.90 point, school record and pool record-breaking performance. He adds to that by qualifying for the NCAA Regionals on the 3-Meter with a 310.57 scoring. His score is less than five points off of breaking the school record. Steele hit a 162.15 on the 3-Meter board, which is a new personal best as well.
Lawrence won the 100 Butterfly with a time of 54.15. Berger claimed a top-spot win in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:08.13 as Zyglocke followed in second with a 1:08.23 for the 1-2 finish.
The win gives the Saxons a 2-4 overall record as they finish their home meet schedule with a .500 average, going 2-2. The other Saxon win came last semester against Pitt-Bradford. They will next travel to Hartwick College on Saturday, January 16 for a 1:00 pm meet start.
They only have one more dual-meet after Hartwick that will also serve as a good heads up for the Empire 8/UNYSCSA Championship meet in mid-February. The Saxons will face Ithaca College in head-to-head action on Saturday, January 23 for a 1:00 pm meet to end the regular season, dual-meet schedule.
