YouTube RecapALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's volleyball team fell in its home-opener to Empire 8 rival, Elmira College on Wednesday evening in the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.

In both the second and third sets of the 0-3 loss, the Saxons (1-15, 0-4 Empire 8) had held considerable leads. The set scores ended in Elmira's favor, 25-11, 25-19 and 25-23.

Had Alfred University held on in the third set with a Saxon lead of 23-20, it would have been the third match in a row that the Saxons had won the third set after winning back-to-back third sets against Empire 8 foes, St. John Fisher College and Stevens Institute of Technology. However, Elmira went on a 5-0 run to end the match and the possibility of extra sets.

Junior
Mary Lou Patnaude (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) led the Saxons in points with 9.5 off of five kills, a team-high of three aces and three assisted blocks. Sophomore
Heather D'Andrea (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) was close behind with 8.5 points off of a team-high eight kills as she also added one block assist. Both Saxons were in double-digits in digs with D'Andrea with 12 and Patnaude with 10.
Sophomore
Jacquelynn Hicks (Greenville, NY/Greenville) also had six and a half points from four kills, three blocking assists and the match's lone solo block.

Freshman
Elisabeth Estep (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) led the home team with 16 digs. Sophomore
Aubrey Totsline (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had 21 set assists out of the 23 Saxon Kills with Patnaude accounting for the other two.

Joining Patnaude, D'Andrea and Hicks in leading scoring was senior
Chelsea Pietrzykowski (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua). The point scores for each where 8.5, 6.5, 6.5 and 6.0, respectively.

The Saxons will next host the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford on Saturday, October 3 at 11:00 am.
