Men's soccer wins physical matchup on the road, 2-0

WILKES-BARRE, PA—The Alfred University men's soccer team (6-1-1, E8 1-0-0) defeated the King's College Monarchs 2-0 on the road Wilkes-Barre Wednesday evening.

It didn't take the Saxons long to get onto the board on the road against King's College Wednesday evening.  Sophomore Miguel Reyes (Valencia, Venezuela/Franklinville) grabbed an early lead in the 2nd minute wrapping a free kick from just outside the eighteen into the back of the net.

King's attempted to knot the game up in the 14th minute when Chris Nygren rattled a shot off the crossbar.  However, the Alfred defense swept the ball away from the goal with haste to keep the Monarchs off the board.

In the 43rd minute, AU extended its lead when junior Aidan Calkins (Oakland, ME/Messalonskee) netted his second goal of the year, taking advantage of a rebounded shot from teammate Richard Lander (Narrowsburg, NY/Sullivan West).  The Saxons rode the 2-0 advantage into the intermission.

In the second half King's staunch defense refused a shot on goal for the Saxons.  In the 65th minute, the Monarchs received a great opportunity to score.  Daniel Hernandez attempted a penalty kick against sophomore keeper Chris Gutierrez (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) but the attempt was no good.  Gutierrez would not face another shot on goal the remainder of the game as the Saxons notched their sixth+ win of the season.

Gutierrez finished the game with five saves in the victory.  His highest total during the 2015 season.

The Saxons look to keeper their seven-game unbeaten streak alive on Saturday when they travel to Elmira to take on the Golden Eagles at 3PM.
