Play of the WeekALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's tennis team fell 3-6 to Empire 8 local Houghton College Tuesday evening on the William T. Brown Tennis Courts.

Freshman
Emma Siemer (Owego, NY/Owego Free Academy) was the only Saxon to pick up two wins on the day. She first teamed with fellow freshman
Inda Gillett (South Kortright, NY/Delaware Academy Central) at No. 3 doubles to claim an 8-3 win over Houghton's Hannah Hale and Katelyn Sylor.

Siemer then took on Jacquelyn Lewis at No. 4 singles and won her match in two sets, 6-3 and 6-2. Gillett battled a tough first set at No. 5 singles against Tera Anderson, falling 4-6 and then taking the second set into a tiebreaker. She fell to the Highlander 5-7 in the second set, however.

Senior captain
Emma Jackson (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) was the only other Saxon to claim a win. She faced off with Houghton's Tori Noller at No. 2 singles. Jackson's match was the first singles match to finish as she took a 6-4, 6-1 victory over the visitor.

Rachel Cook (Youngstown, OH/Laurel Springs) was Jackson's teammate at No. 1 singles that had to go to extra games against Bethany Chesebro and Noller. The Alfred University duo fell 7-9 in the end. Cook went on to play a first to 10 third set against Chesebro at No. 1 singles as well. The Saxon was topped 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 as they finished the three and a half-hour match.

The Saxons (0-8, 0-4 Empire 8) will get a break from competition as they just finished seven matches in 11 days. They will next host the Blue Devils of Fredonia on Wednesday, September 30 at 3:00 pm in their second-to-last non-conference match of the fall season.
