Liz Thompson (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads), a sophomore third baseman on the Alfred University softball team, has been named Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week.
Thompson was honored for her play in two non-league home doubleheaders last week, in which the Saxons went 4-0 with sweeps of RIT and Medaille. For the two games, she hit .857 (12-for-14) with a triple and two doubles, with nine runs scored and four RBIs. Thompson was also a perfect six-for-six in stolen base attempts.
In the four games, Thompson raised her average 114 points, from .500 to .614, tops in the Empire 8. She also leads the conference in hits (27), triples (three) runs (19), and stolen bases (nine, in nine attempts). She leads her team in on-base percentage (.630, second in the E8) and is second on her team and fourth in the league in in slugging (.818). Thompson also has a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, with no errors in 44 chances.
AU, 14-2 and ranked 28
th in the NFCA Division III poll, is in action next on Tuesday, April 7, when the Saxons open their Empire 8 Conference slate with a 5 p.m. doubleheader against visiting Houghton.
